"Mrs Beau Lythoe v Any NHS Trust"
A Medico-Legal Session

The mock trial will take place in one of the spectacular Court Rooms at St George's Hall, Liverpool. Barrister Charles Feeny will talk about the Courtroom and its impressive legal history. He will also explain about the mechanisms of a civil trial.

The trial itself relates to the management of Mrs Lythoe's labour and her post delivery care. Mrs Lythoe will be represented by barrister Rebecca Sutton. The NHS Trust will be represented by barrister Doug Cooper. Expert evidence will be called with Liz Adams, Consultant Urogynaecologist at the Liverpool Women's Hospital, appearing as expert witness for Mrs Lythoe and Adam Gornall, Consultant in Fetal Medicine at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, for the NHS Trust. Each expert will be subject to cross examination.

Mrs Lythoe alleges that those treating her at the hospital have been negligent and the hospital seeks to defend the action.

At the end of the trial the audience will be invited to vote for their choice of "winner". The judge, barrister and deputy district judge Wendy J Owen, will then deliver a formal judgment. The trial is intended to give the audience a true flavour of clinical negligence proceedings from the legal perspective and should provide an invaluable learning experience for those attending.
